With the festive season fast approaching, some couples will have thought about getting married during the winter months in order to add a feeling of winter wonderland to their special day.
Whether you want to wed in a winter location, marry while on skis’ or draft in some fake snow and festive decorations to your reception, a winter wedding can be a memorable way to tie the knot, both for yourself and your guests.
Here are just a few ideas of locations which could add a bit of winter wonder to your wedding and honeymoon:
Ice hotel, Sweden
The IceHotel at Jukkasjarvi in Sweden is rebuilt each year, and can offer a bizarre and beautiful location for a winter wedding.
Located on the banks of the Torne River in northern Sweden, the IceHotel has captivated travellers for many years, with intricately built rooms that offer the chance to spend the night under the stars, wrapped up toasty warm in sleeping bags and reindeer pelts.
If you’d rather spend your nights in somewhere a little warmer, the IceHotel also provides a number of chalets and hotel rooms; although many who visit the resort combine a stay in the warmth with at least one night in the ice cool hotel, so why not give it a go on your honeymoon?
One of the most beautiful sights to behold is the Northern Lights, and there are nightly excursions from the hotel to go and view this natural phenomenon. The illumination in the sky can help add to the beauty of the occasion, and afterwards you can relax with a mug of hot chocolate in your chalet or sip ice cold vodka at the world famous IceBar.
Christmas Island, Pacific
It may sound a bit of a cliché to honeymoon at somewhere named Christmas during a winter wedding, but in fact these islands in the Pacific offer the opportunity for some relaxation, both above and below water.
If you’re thinking of heading Down Under for your honeymoon, why not consider including a stop at Christmas Island as part of your trip. Flights to the island are available from Perth in Western Australia, and can provide you with the opportunity soak up some sunshine and swim in crystal clear waters during your first holiday as a couple.
Scuba excursions are popular around the island, and you may even catch a glimpse of the majestic whale shark, the world’s largest fish returns to the island to feed on plankton, and is a popular attraction for those on boat trips.
Alaska
If you’re after making your special day a little cooler, why not consider heading north to the frozen lands of Alaska. After taking a flight over the tundra, which you can see from the comfort of a helicopter before you tie the knot on top of a glacier, surrounded by gorgeous views of majestic ice landscapes before a reception in the states’ capital city Juneau, where you’ll find fabulous spas such as Pearson’s Pond where you can relax during your honeymoon.
Go European
City breaks in European cities such as Paris and Rome, which are renowned as being some of the most romantic cities in the world, are popular locations for honeymooners, both as cities to explore and as bases for other activities in the surrounding areas.
Take in the sights during the day, visit the theatre in the afternoon and dine at restaurants in view of landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa during the evening. Alternatively you could venture into the countryside for wine tasting and gourmet cookery classes, or relax at a number of beach resorts along the coast, or even get pampered at a health spa as part of your honeymoon.
With the coming of the Christmas markets, city centres in Europe are transformed into family friendly festive wonderlands, filled with the aroma of mulled wine, gingerbread and warm stroopwaffels, so why not combine a visit to a city such as Munich or Paris with a visit to their Christmas market to bring a little extra warmth to your honeymoon.
