You expected to spend a lot on the dress and decorations, but finding out invitations are going to be a blow to your budget could be troublesome.

Its time to get creative.

When it comes to creating the wedding cards that will inform your friends and family of the details pertaining to your day of matrimony, you might be surprised by the attendant price tag.

You certainly expected to spend a lot on the dress and the decorations, but finding out that paper invitations are going to cost you several hundred dollars could be a real blow to your budget.

So if you’re looking for areas to cut back, this is one where you stand to save a lot. By skipping the pricy printers and looking for alternatives when it comes to the invites, you can really cut costs.

Here are just a few ideas for the budget bride when it comes to penning the invitations.

DIY

There is no better way to save money on traditional invitations than by creating them yourself. While you can certainly go old-school and handwrite each one, this hardly seems economical. Instead, utilize your computer. Pick up some card stock at the local craft store (you can generally find kits that come with paper and envelopes for both invitations and RSVPs), write out your text in a word doc (use a fancy font), and then print a couple of test pages (use scratch paper until you get everything right). From there, it’s just a matter of hitting print and watching your invites magically appear.

Decorate plain paper

Choosing the paper can often comprise the biggest portion of the cost of cards. You want it to be fancy, but those few extra cents per page can add up pretty quickly to an astronomical cost. Instead, pick plainer paper and decorate it on your own. Stamps are the easiest way to embellish, although you could also use stickers or get fancy with ribbons and glitter pens. Another idea with less cost is to take some flowers or leaves from your garden, press them until dry, and then glue or decoupage them to your invitations.

Order online

By using online printers, you may be able to cut the cost of your invites by a significant margin. They may also offer more discount packages for items with set graphics or fill-in-the blank text templates. If you don’t have a design in mind for personalised wedding cards, then this is a great way to save some money and time, but still get a beautiful set of invitations. Just make sure, if you’re turning the task over to an online retailer, that you double and triple check the spelling on any materials you provide.

Skip the extras

All those extra envelopes and pages can really add up, especially if you’re going with a professional printer. But all you really need is the card, the envelope, and the RSVP. So skip the double envelope, print extras like directions to the reception and registration information at home (and stuff the envelopes later), and use standard size cards and postcard RSVPs to cut back on the cost of postage.

Evites

Want to cut costs enormously AND do something good for the environment? Evites are quick, easy, paperless, and best of all, free! Plus, you’ll have an instant tally of who is coming and who will be out of town. The only potential problem is inviting those who don’t have the internet (like older relatives), but in this case you could make just a few paper invitations.

With a profusion of blooming flowers, and an air of rebirth, Spring lends itself to a simple yet elegant celebration of a new, shared life.

Ignite your creativity.

A wedding held during spring is ideal if you are interested in doing everything yourself.

With comfortable weather, cool, soft breezes, a profusion of blooming flowers, and an air of rebirth…

Spring time lends itself to creating a simple yet beautiful and elegant celebration of a new, shared life.

Spring wedding planning can begin with handmade invitations.

With proper planning, you can choose to make the invitations yourself using dried, pressed flowers to enhance them.

If you want to keep a theme running from invitation to celebration, you can use the same types of flowers for the invitations as you will use for decorations during the actual party.

Spring Flowers

Choose the flowers ahead of time, place them in between two sheets of wax paper, and then put them inside the pages of a book or under a heavy object to keep the petals flat. Let them rest and dry for a week or until they are ready.

Pick flowers with big petals to ensure that they will dry well and maintain their original shape. Once the flowers are ready, use a hot glue gun to glue them to cardstock paper.

Protect the flowers by gluing some vellum paper on top of them. The actual wording of the invitation can either be handwritten on the cardstock, for an ultra personal touch, or can be printed on another paper and then glued to the cardstock.

Venue Decorating

For the actual celebration, you can decorate simply and inexpensively. You can set up round tables with chairs for the guests. Cover the tables in long tablecloths that fit with your color scheme.

Low glass bowls can be placed at each table as centerpieces. Fill these with water, add some floating candles and colorful petals from your chosen flowers to the water, and you will instantly create an atmosphere of romance.

Strew some of the full flowers around the bowls and throughout the table to complete the look. You can also use this same technique to decorate the buffet table. Just use larger glass bowls at either end of the table or right in the center.

Wedding Cake

The wedding cake is not to be forgotten. If you want to keep the cake simple and elegant as well as consistent with the rest of your decorations, choose a cake with plain frosting then decorate it with the same type of flowers that you used in your invitations and the rest of the decorations.

This is the big day for you and your partner. If you want people to remember your wedding, you should make it unique and put your own stamp on it.

You can make your wedding fun.

Sometimes attending weddings can trigger a sense of deja vu.

The diamond solitaire ring…

The strapless satin gown…

The cake with the bride and groom on top… Sound familiar?

How can you make your wedding day special?

Here’s some helpful hints:

This is the big day for you and your partner, so it should reflect your personalities, interests and sense of style.

If you want people to remember your wedding, make it unique and put your own stamp on it. If you both have a particular hobby, you could theme your wedding around that.

Spice up the Rings

Choose a unique ring such made out of a different material, such as a titanium ring. It is very common to see platinum rings and solitaire diamonds, but why not choose something to reflect your personality? If you want to add a bit of individuality, think about choosing a colored gemstone, like a ruby, emerald or sapphire.

Black diamond rings used to be associated with morbid things, but are becoming increasingly popular with brides wanting to buck the trend and stand out from the crowd. Have a look around antiques dealers for a one-of-a-kind vintage ring, or think about commissioning an artisan ring.

Everyone’s Looking at the Dress

The dress is the most important thing for every bride. All eyes will be on you, but make sure you pick a dress that suits your style. If you want to choose traditional white, perhaps you could add a splash of color in the details or the accessories.

You might also have some custom shoes made to add a subtle difference to your wedding outfit. You could ask your mother if you could use the fabric from her wedding dress to incorporate into a new dress, giving it extra meaning.

Write Your Vows from the Heart

You’ve heard those same wedding vows at everyone else’s weddings, but what do those words mean to you? Write your own vows to add that personal touch to the ceremony. This is your chance to say something meaningful and memorable to your partner.

Other Easy Things You Can to be Unique

Invitations – To add your own personal mark, you could make your own wedding invitations and write your own words. Your friends and family will be able to see the extra thought and care you put into them. If you’re web-savvy, you could send out digital invitations or set up a website with all your wedding details.

Photography – Put disposable cameras on the tables at the reception so that your guests can take their own photos. When having professional photos taken, ask your photographer to catch some off-guard moments, or strike a fun pose! Mix it up with some quirky shots as well as the standard poses.

The Venue – This is very personal to you. You might want a destination wedding in a foreign country where you could incorporate that country’s traditions and customs, or you may want to be married in your local church or a place that is special to you and your partner. Instead of taking a car to the wedding, you could have arrive in a horse and carriage, a rickshaw, a vintage car or even a sidecar.

The Cake – The cake doesn’t have to be a traditional tiered cake with circular layers. You could choose any shape you like and any color icing. Instead of the bride and groom figures on the top, pick something different top top it off. More and more couples are choosing towers of cute individual cupcakes instead.

If you are trying to decide whether to go green, you'll be pleased to know environmentally friendly weddings are pocket-friendly, and simple to plan.

Green is easier than you think

Wedding planning is no easy feat.

Not only do most couples have to keep in mind their budget, but they have to take into consideration their families and close friends when planning.

Throw one more thing into the mix, and it may lead to melt downs.

When a couple decides to plan an environmentally-friendly, or “green,” wedding, this may be that one extra task that takes stress levels up a few notches.

While the idea of adding another task to the to-do list may seem daunting to the soon-to-be Mr. and Mrs., planning a green wedding is far simpler than many imagine.

It is also fairly pocket-friendly, and as anyone who has planned a wedding knows, this is an important feature. If you and your soon-to-be spouse decide to help out the environment when you stroll down the aisle, here are some ways to make the whole process a bit easier and greener.

Environmentally Friendly Weddings

Wedding Venues

When looking for a wedding venue, look for green options, which are everywhere. If you want to have your event at a resort or hotel, look for websites that provide information on eco-friendly hotels and resorts.

At hotels and resorts, you can also hold all of the wedding related events in one place which cuts down on drive time for everyone. If you are a fan of a more natural setting for your wedding, then you can say “I do” outdoors at a park or beach. Again, set up the reception area at the same site to eliminate traveling.

Invitations

Invitations are your wedding’s first impressions. From your invitation, guests will find out the theme, the formality, and other aspects of your special day. Today, invitations printed on recycled paper are easy to find. Most invitation vendors are carrying all of your wedding paper needs made from post-consumer waste.

You can find eco-friendly ideas for matching invites, menus, and wedding programs. Another really green invite option is invitations that are recycled and embedded with seeds. Your guests can plant the seeds in their own gardens.

Wedding Dress

To many brides, nothing is more important the dress worn on the big day. Typically when a wedding dress is made, waste is created in large amounts. If you are looking to be kind to the environment when choosing your dress, it is becoming easier to do.

Today, a lot of well-known wedding dress designers are taking the eco-friendly path. They are using organic cotton, hemp, and silk to create fabulous dresses. If you want a specific look and cannot find it in organic materials, then look for pre-owned dresses. Another great way to keep the earth happy is to allow bridesmaids to wear dresses they already own.

Flowers

Flowers are a wedding must-have, but so often they are the opposite of being “green.” Waste and pollution are two factors that come into play when choosing flowers for a wedding, because most flowers are actually imported into the United States.

Choose locally grown flowers and flowers from farmers markets. Not only will you help save the environment, but you will find that you save money by not importing rare flowers. You can also donate the flowers after your special day to different groups that will deliver them to rehabilitation centers and hospice patients.

Guest List

Keep your guest list in check if you want to lessen your impact. The biggest factor in any wedding is size. For every person invited to your wedding, you must take into consideration, the miles they will travel, the amount of food consumed, the increased size of the venue, and all of the waste when the day ends. This is another way to help keep your budget in check. The environment and your pockets will be happy.

You want your day to be extra special, and that means you want everyone who’s important to you to be there. No matter how much effort you put into choosing a theme, getting all the right decorations, and dressing everyone just right, you’ll need great invitations if you want guests.

You’re working hard to make sure that everything goes perfectly on the big day, so don’t sell yourself short by settling for ordinary invitations. You’ll want your guests to receive a memorable invitation that inspires them to save the date, make travel plans, and count the days until your wedding day arrives.

When you’re having a winter wedding, a great way to accomplish this is to include some holiday spirit in your invitations. Most people enjoy the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations that come along with the winter season, so appeal to their desire to welcome the holidays by giving them something to look forward to. By making sure that your invitations are festive and unique, you’ll get your guests to remember you and your big day.

Elegant Tri-Fold
If you’re going for an upscale look, use textured cardstock, scrapbooking paper, and silk or velvet ribbon to make these beautiful invitations. Rich winter colors include silver, cream, and ice blue; for a more festive scheme, use cranberry, forest green, and gold. Fold your cardstock into thirds so that you can create “doors” that will open to reveal your wedding information. Now, paste a rectangle of fancy scrapbooking paper onto the inside of the invitation as the background for your information card. Once this has dried, glue on your printed information card and simply tie one or two strands of ribbon around your invitation to hold the “doors” closed. Your guests will be honored to receive this elegant invitation and will remember your day with anticipation.

Fun Fabric Pocket
Go for a unique look by creating fabric pockets for your invitations. As long as you have a sewing machine, this is a speedy way to make your invitations memorable. Pick out some fabric with a fun holiday pattern and pick up some ribbon to match – red and white with a candy cane print or fabric with holly or berries on it are great choices. Snowflake prints are also pretty and are wonderful if you don’t want to embrace a single holiday tradition. Simply make rectangular invitations out of cardstock, then use pinking shears to cut out two smaller rectangles of fabric – these invitations are more fun if you can leave a good third of the invitation peeking out at the top. Place one fabric rectangle directly on top of the other and sew around the left and right edges and bottom to create a pocket. Slip your invitation into the pocket and tie a strand of ribbon around the top of the pocket to add a little more flair.

Simply 3D
Eye-catching simplicity is the name of the game when you make these stunning invitations. Make your invitations out of cardstock folded in half and include your information on the inside. Find a simple stamp that expresses your theme, such as a pine cone or Christmas tree silhouette, then use metallic gold ink or paint to stamp a single image on the front of the invitation. Tie a length of thin ribbon in a cranberry shade around the front flap of your invitation, placing it near the center fold. Attach small items such as mini pine cones or jingle bells to the ends of the ribbon, and your invitation is ready to wow guests.

Who could say “no” to spectacular invitations like these? Maybe you have a tried-and-true winter invitation that brought you a crowd of fun and festive guests. Please share your ideas with us in the comments.

Autumn is the perfect choice for an unforgettably romantic wedding. Here's how to take advantage of all that fall has to offer.

Autumn weather is perfect for traveling and you can avoid the summer heat, allowing you to enjoy the brilliant foliage of an outdoor venue.

However, there are a few factors that you should consider when planning your fall wedding…

Wedding Location
In autumn, it is easy to find the perfect wedding venue. An outdoor wedding is a fantastic choice. Consider a vineyard, a park or a garden. On the other hand, if you prefer an indoor location, a church, barn or even a castle are some of beautiful options.

Wedding Colors
The golden rule is to always make sure that the colors you choose match the wedding theme you want. Another advantage of planning a fall wedding is that there are lots of colors you can choose from.

If you want a traditional fall wedding tone you might want to choose from the following colors – red, orange, yellow and brown. However, you can think outside the box and incorporate peach, purples and pinks for an autumn look that avoids being predictable.

Wedding Décor
To enhance the feeling of fall for your wedding you will need to choose decorations, accents and even wedding favors that will complement it.

For centerpieces, choose autumn flowers like calla lilies, hydrangeas or roses, and even decorative pumpkins or squash as accents. A few orange and red candles enhance the look even more.

Wedding Invitations
Fall is all about the brilliant autumn leaves. A subtle leaf-embossed invitation is a great idea. But choosing the right colors is just as important. Try to combine two to three colors for your invitations.

Wedding Flowers
There are lots of flowers to choose from for your fall wedding. Mums, daisies, roses, carnations, marigold and asters are just to name a few.

Wedding Attire

Length – This will depend on how formal or informal the wedding is. A dress with a long train is perfect for a formal fall wedding. If you plan on having an outdoor wedding, you might want to consider a shorter gown so that it won’t be dragged along the ground.

Style – Use your personal style and your ceremony vision as a guide. You can have a gown adorned with beading, pearls and laces to add a touch of elegance. Just remember to always choose a wedding gown that not only suits the kind of wedding you want, but also makes you feel confident and comfortable.

Color – Although a white wedding gown is perfect for any type of wedding, a cream-color or ivory wedding dress is perfect for your fall wedding. Some brides also prefer something more non-traditional by adding red, orange or yellow accents. Colored shoes beneath a white dress are always a huge hit!

It’s no wonder fall is such a popular time of year for a wedding. With all the attractive colors, styles and options to choose from, the hardest part will be making up your mind!

Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about wedding invitations, including assembling, addressing, and mailing your wedding invitations. This truly is all about wedding invitations.

There is nothing more frustrating than having a beautifully addressed invitation be returned to sender with postage markings all over it because of an incorrect address. So let’s discuss some guidelines to help you put your address list together properly.

Addressing Wedding Invitations
Feel free to add your own style. Nicknames or abbreviations should be avoided when possible except for Mr., Mrs., Jr., etc.. You may use an initial if you do not know the full name, or if the person never uses his given name.

Cities, states and numbered streets should be written out in full (with the exception of D.C.). In regards to addresses, the only optional abbreviations are for Saint (St.) or Mount (Mt.), which can be written either way.

Making sure you have the correct address is paramount. There is nothing more frustrating than having a beautifully addressed invitation returned to sender with postage markings all over it because of an incorrect address or insufficient postage. Utilize the USPS website to verify zipcodes.

Assembling Your Invitations
The best way to assemble your invitation is to set everything up on a cleared table, in an assembly line fashion – placing them in the order in which they go. No more than two people should be assembling the invitations at the same time (one on each side of the table), because it creates too much confusion. It also makes it easier if you place stamps on all of your response envelopes before you start assembling.

If your invitations are single fold and the wording is on the outside only, insertions are placed on top. If your invitations are multi-fold and/or the wording is inside the fold then insertions are placed inside the first fold. The insertions go in the following order (from bottom to top):

Tissue Paper
Reception Card
Map
Response Envelope
Response Card (tucked under the flap of the response envelope)

This is all placed inside the inner envelope, printed side facing the flap. The inner envelope is then placed inside the outer envelope, flap side facing the front of the outer envelope. Make sure before you begin that every stack has the exact same count.

For instance, if you are starting with a stack of 100 invitations, make sure you have a stack of 100 of everything else (tissue paper, reception card, maps, respond envelopes, and respond cards). Start assembling your invitations one at a time, but do not seal the outer envelope. When you are finished, make sure your counts are still even. If you have 4 invitations left, make sure you have 4 of everything else left. This is why you don’t seal the envelopes – if your counts aren’t the same, then you can check the invitations to see which one is either missing an insertion, or has an extra insertion, and still correct it. Once everything is correct, then you can seal your envelopes!

Here’s another great tip – number your guest list, and then number the response cards somewhere inconspicuously (on the back or inside if they are folded) in pencil with numbers that correspond to your guest list. If you receive a response in the mail that is blank (believe it or not, people forget to write their name in all the time), you will know exactly who it is from by cross referencing the number to your guest list!

When should I send out my invitations?

Invitations should be sent out six to eight weeks before your wedding date. If you have a large number of out of town guests, we suggest eight weeks to give your guests the courtesy of making reservations and securing travel arrangements more economically.

Mailing Your Invitations
When you first receive your invitations, assemble one complete invitation (including the tissue paper, any maps or additional insertions, and the stamp on the return response envelope) and take it to your local Post Office for weight and measurement. Sometimes it’s the size and not the weight which may require more postage than one first class stamp, so we encourage you to take it to the window and have a postal worker weigh and measure it for you. This step can save a lot of aggravation later.

Ask to see their selection of wedding stamps and see if they are available as self-stick stamps. When it is time to mail your invitations, if you hand deliver them to your local post office window, you can request that they be hand canceled with a rubber stamp, instead of by a machine. It makes the front of the envelope look a lot more attractive without the large ugly black postal markings all over it. At our local post office they use a nice maroon colored ink for hand canceling.

You really can save hundreds if not thousands if you take our advice and stretch your wedding budget. Here's how you can start saving now.

Many couples are shocked when they learn that the average wedding costs between $15,000 and $25,000. But, you really can save hundreds even thousands if you use good organizational skills, ingenuity, flexibility, and enlist the help of friends and family.

<!--
google_ad_client = "pub-5261536816910274";
/* STLW Single Post Ads */

Today, about 70% of the marrying couples pay for their own weddings, so setting a realistic budget and sticking to it is essential if you are to keep the cost of your wedding within your budget. Let’s get creative and examine your options.

Research the Internet
Search the Internet thoroughly to save time and money. Websites like STL Weddings provide links to wedding related businesses which might be your answer to quality products and services. Brides can compare and save by searching and comparing local vendors. You can also save money by making purchases online, so be sure to do your homework. Sites like Amazon.com and Ebay could help you save hundreds.

Set your priorities and your budget
As you begin to think about your wedding, pull out a sheet of paper and write down these three column headings:

Must have
Optional
Nice to have

Base your decisions on availability, budget and ingenuity
Once you decide what your priorities are, use your creativity. For example, involve yourself, your friends and your family in the preparations. Loved ones will appreciate the opportunity to contribute to your happy day, and they will have fun and save you money.

Choose vendors and service providers who can assure your priorities will be met. Be firm when you negotiate with vendors and service providers. Stick to what you want and stick to your budget. Do not let them talk you into anything you didn’t budget for or don’t want. By the same token, be flexible enough to spend more or substitute, if you cannot find exactly what you considered to be a priority within your budget.

Be sure you are familiar with all changes, return and/or cancellation policies before you sign any contract or finalize any arrangement. Having to buy something twice, or having to pay additional fees for changes can and will add up. Always keep documentation of every contract and receipt in a safe place and pay special attention to deadlines for returning items.

Always comparison shop, and start early because you can save a lot of money if you shop bargains, clearance sales, and online stores. Do not get confused between inexpensive and cheap. Before you buy any reduced priced items, check to make sure they are not inferior quality because most of time you will not be able to return or exchange them.

Bridal Consultants and Wedding Professionals

Professionals can save you time and money, but remember to base your decision on your budget. Engage a wedding consultant to help you with tasks as small as locating trusted vendors and service providers, or tasks as large as organizing your entire wedding event. The more you do yourself, the more money you save. In St. Louis, you can research St Louis weddings on sites like this one.

Save Money on Invitations
If you are willing to depart from traditional printed invitations, you may be able to save a lot of money. The big trend in wedding invitations is creating your own. You can create your own invitation on your computer and print it on specialty wedding paper. Head to your nearest Office Max or Office Depot for a nice selection of specialty papers.

You could also e-mail your friends and family an invitation to a private wedding site where they can get an official invitation, as well as directions and registry information.

Save Money on Wedding Attire
Wedding gowns are very expensive but there are many options you may exercise to get what you want and save money. Do you have a friend or a family member who sews? Engage them and in return give them the honor of serving as an attendant in your wedding party.

If you decide to purchase a wedding gown, go to department stores and check their sale area before you decide to have one custom made. Occasionally they have wedding gowns on clearance and you can buy one at a fraction of its original price and save a ton of money. Another option is buying a sample gown which was used in a fashion show or display.

If you still cannot find that special gown, and you need to purchase one, consider a simple gown off the rack, or comb the wedding ads and auction sites on and off the web. You’ll probably be able to buy a gown that was used only once or even a brand new one for next to nothing.

To save even more, you may consider a white prom or a bridesmaid dress. To find the styles that work best with your body type and to learn more about today’s most fabulous wedding gown designers, check out Bridal Gown Designers. The site contains gown designer information, web listings, and access to exclusive online discounts.

Save on Tuxedos
Rent the groom’s tuxedo, shoes and accessories and be sure to select all of the groomsmen’s tuxedos at the same time. Many rental places will furnish the groom’s attire for free if all the men from the wedding party will rent at the same time as one package. Its customary for groomsmen to pay for their own rental unless the wedding is in a far away place and the groomsman must do extensive travel.

Save on Wedding Flowers
You can save money on your flower arrangements if you are willing to be original and creative. If any of your guests create flower arrangements, even as a hobby, ask them to do them. If not, you’ll need to purchase the bridal bouquet and flowers for the altar from a reputable florist.

Think about giving the bridesmaids mixed seasonal flowers (sometimes you can find these in supermarkets). These flowers can later be put in vases and can serve as centerpieces for the reception tables. Your bridesmaids may not be able to keep the flowers forever, but they will remember your wedding every time they see the vase. Plus, you’ll save money.

Save on the Reception Meal
The reception is the most expensive part of your wedding, but its possible to have a memorable reception and stay within budget.

You must be very particular when choosing the reception venue. It must be appropriate and fit your reception plan. It does not have to be a traditional hall. Consider a historical home, a park, a museum, fairgrounds, even public gardens.

You also need to know if the reception site will supply you with furniture and dining needs. If not, you must calculate rental fees. Want to save even more money? Consider a slow period, Friday evening, or Sunday afternoon. You’ll be able to negotiate the better deals.

If you invite some good cooks to your wedding, you may ask to them prepare their favorite recipes for your wedding reception. Also, if you invite some good bakers, ask if they could prepare sweets and desserts or maybe even your wedding cake. You’ll save money and they will feel honored for being asked.

If you have your reception catered, you must consider the number of guests, the time of day and how the food will be served. Will it be refreshments only? Dessert only? Light snack? Sit-down? Buffet? Will you serve alcohol? Will it be open bar?

There is an enormous price difference between a light brunch and a five course dinner. Try having a brunch or an early lunch and you can serve fruit and vegetables, salads, eggs, cheeses, pastries, coffee, tea and cold drinks buffet style. Try having a late lunch and you’ll only need to add a few meats and poultry.

Save on Wedding Photography
Compare prices and references before hiring a photographer. Choose the very best photographer within your budget. When weighing the value in predetermined packages, always go for quality over quantity.

Save Money on your Wedding

Use your creativity and stick to your wedding budget plan – then shop smart and negotiate rates – you’re sure to save hundreds if not thousands if you stick to your guns. When its all said and done, use the money you save on an all-inclusive honeymoon so you can relax and enjoy your first week together as a married couple.
