Take Care of Your Skin

Healthy skin is beautiful skin, and you will radiate good looks through the care of your skin.

You have always known to apply sunscreen and moisturizer as part of your daily care.

And to use a good cleanser and to take off your makeup before bed each night.

Now, with as much time as you have before the wedding, you can pamper your skin for that healthy, lovely glow.

All skin experts agree that the steps to good skin are cleansing, ex-foliating, moisturizing, and protecting.

In addition to applying the right cleansers and creams, you will encourage healthy skin by incorporating the following smart skin-care practices.

Smart Skin Care

Drink plenty of water. Hydrated skin is less dry and healthier.

Get plenty of sleep. The body’s cells need sleep to replenish, and a lack of sleep gives you those dark, aging circles under your eyes.

Get plenty of exercise. Exercise, you know, is good for your heart and your body, but it also brings a healthy glow to your skin.

Use sunscreen. Yes, we all feel like we look better with a tan, but the damage to your skin is not worth it. Avoid tanning beds, as some intensifier creams can burn the living daylights out of you.

Avoid self-tanners. Some people get good results, but if you are not well-practiced, you don’t want to be an orange-streaked mess.

Use moisturizers at night. Invest in a good nighttime skin cream and apply it according to directions.

Use wrinkle-erasing creams like L’Oreal Plenitude Line Eraser Daily Treatment.

Use under-eye creams. If you have dark circles or puffy bags under your eyes, start a solid, regular regimen of applying a quality under-eye cream like Vita-K Solution gel.

Moisturize your lips. Dry, chapped lips can split and crack, and at certain times of the year, your lips will be drier than others.

Apply foot moisturizer and then cotton socks at night.

Moisturize your hands. They will be on display.

Moisturize your décolletage and neck. They too will be on view, and it’s a good idea to start a skin care regime for these areas now.

Choose your products with care; get a good skin care expert to recommend the right products for you, and – most importantly – take your own steps to care for your skin. If you are going to try new products, just be sure to start several months before the wedding, so you do not risk irritations and breakouts before the big day.

Whether or not he says so, your fiancé wants to look his best too! Here are some things you can both do to make HIM feel great for the big day.

Get Him Looking his Best!

Most of us start planning for our big day months if not years in advance.

We grow our hair out or we cut it short. We wax our legs and bleach our teeth.

We get weekly manicures and pedicures for months before the wedding just to insure that everything will be perfect.

No stone is left unturned. Or is it… What about him? You know, that guy sitting next to you.

He’s getting married too. And whether he says anything or not, he probably wants to look his best for his wedding. So, here are some things you can both do to make HIM feel great for the big day:

Get him a manicure

The fact is, real men do get manicures. Okay, not all men and not all the time, but if you look around you’ll see more men then you think getting their nails buffed to perfection. You can assure him that they don’t put polish on men’s fingers (unless of course you request it!) but they do get all the dry skin and ragged cuticles taken care of.

This is especially important if your man works with his hands on a daily basis as his hands are probably callused and rough. He’ll be shaking hands all day, never mind the fact that you’ll be slipping his ring on his finger for the first and only time. What better reason is there to get the car grease out from under his nails?

Have him get a massage

You can give him one yourself or the two of you can go somewhere together to have them done. Again, this isn’t something that most men think to do on their own, but I can guarantee he’ll appreciate it. Men have their own stresses when it comes to planning a wedding. Often they’re carrying some of the financial burden (along with you) and they have their own emotions to work through as the big day approaches. While people flock around us, the brides, most grooms don’t really get pampered at all during the wedding process.

Involve him in some of your healthy activities and eating habits

Even if your groom-to-be is in great shape already, going for walks together and eating healthy meals before the wedding will have real benefits. If you’re trying to lose some weight or get in shape having his support will be invaluable. Plus, the time spent going for walks and getting outdoors will give the two of you a chance to connect with one another during this crazy time. And the benefits of eating healthfully are pretty clear. You’ll both have more energy, you’ll sleep better and that will make the planning process seem much more manageable. Also, he’ll stand taller and feel better knowing how great he looks in his tux on his wedding day.

Send him to a barbershop for a professional shave

It’s as close as most men will get (or will want to get) to a spa treatment. A good barber will use hot towels and lotions to make his face smooth and soft. And since it’s a barbershop, well let’s just say it won’t bring up the kind of issues that could be raised if you dragged him to a spa.

The most important thing you can do for him during this time?

Ask him his opinion and talk to him about things. Even if you think he doesn’t care about any of the wedding planning chances are there are certain things he has strong feelings on. Don’t shoot down every idea he has just because it doesn’t fit into your idea of the Dream Day.

This is his wedding too, and if he wants football helmet favors then – well – at least be open to discussing it. Last but not least, don’t forget to give him a big kiss and thank him for being there. After all, what’s a wedding without the groom?

Want whiter teeth in time for your wedding day? Let us show you the best ways to get your teeth as white as your dress for stunning photos.

Your teeth could be even whiter...

Color is one of the biggest elements of your wedding day.

What color bridesmaid’s dresses to choose? What color tablecloths? What color flowers? What color lipstick? etc.

One element you can’t forget, though, is “What color teeth?!”

For many brides, having the whitest teeth possible is crucial on the day when they will most likely have the most eyes and camera lenses focused on them.

As the wife of a dentist and guinea pig to many types of teeth whitening, I have compiled some of the options available to you and how they worked for my husband and I.

Laser whitening

The quickest way to whiten your teeth is through a one-hour laser whitening technique like BriteSmile. Many cosmetic dentists offer this treatment, which only takes one hour and can last two years. The dentist will use a gas plasma light and low-peroxide gel to lighten your teeth. You will wear eyeshades to protect your eyes from the strong light which is focused directly on your teeth. You will look funny as the procedure is being done, but the results are astonishing. When my husband had it done by a colleague it lightened his coffee and cigarette stained teeth so much that they were off the chart (meaning they were so white there was no color to compare it to).

The downfalls of laser whitening, though, are that it is very costly and is not covered by insurance. The one hour session typically costs $600 – $1,000 plus. Also, if you have sensitive teeth the procedure can be very painful. My husband does not have sensitive teeth but still had to take a pain killer following the treatment because his teeth hurt so bad. Because I have such sensitive teeth, he would not allow me to have laser whitening done—even though it would have been for free.

Dual whitening and trays

Cheaper and safer for sensitive teeth then laser whitening, is an in-office process where whitener is applied to the teeth and exposed to light. The whitener is then washed off and reapplied numerous times. Your dentist will also make you a tray (like a mouth guard) to wear in your mouth for about an hour a day with whitening gel inside. Or, you can just have the dentist make you a tray, without using the light, and wear it more often (about 3-4 hours a day). This approach is cheaper then dual whitening (about $300).

My sister went with the tray only approach and while she had to wear it often, it did whiten her teeth (which had been stained from braces) considerably. I tried dual whitening, but it still proved to be too painful for my very sensitive teeth (my teeth are extremely sensitive due to damage caused by an eating disorder).

Over the counter products

If hundreds of dollars for whitening is not in your budget, there are many ways to make your teeth whiter for less. While these products won’t last years (like lasers or dual whitening) they can help get your teeth really white for your wedding day. There are numerous whitening toothpastes you can buy and, the newest product on the market is Crest Whitestrips. The Crest strips are clear, invisible, strips that stick to your teeth and invisibly lift off stains. They stay on the teeth for ½ hour twice a day and cost about $30 a box.

The way I achieved teeth that were white enough for my husband’s approval on my wedding day was by using Crest Whitestrips for a month and Rembrandt Whitening Toothpaste every other day for a month. I also used the toothpaste right before photographs began on my wedding day. For me, this whitening technique produced excellent results with no pain! (It should be noted that my teeth were pretty white to begin with, though, as I don’t smoke or drink caffeine).

So, there you have it. I have outlined the main ways to get your teeth as white as your dress on your wedding day (that is assuming you are wearing a white dress). For more information on any of these techniques please consult with your dentist – he or she can help you decide what approach is right for your teeth and budget. I am not advocating any particular product or procedure – as everyone’s teeth are different and need different care. This information is just to get you started on your journey towards whiter teeth. Happy wedding and whitening!

On a day when its absolutely essential to look your best, finding makeup that stays put is critical. Today we explore problem areas and makeup mishaps.

Make sure its just right!

On a day where it’s absolutely essential you look your best, finding makeup that stays put is critical.

You’ll be eating, repeatedly kissing your new husband, and possibly even crying tears of joy.

Potential “tear times” include the ceremony, the father/daughter dance, and the touching toasts.

Amidst all this, you’ll need to look your best without running to the powder room every few minutes to insure that your lipstick hasn’t smudged or your mascara hasn’t streaked down your cheeks.

And remember the photographer; he or she will be at your side practically every minute of the day. I guarantee you won’t want any makeup mishaps forever caught on film.

Problem Areas

The most problematic makeup areas are the eyes and lips. Lipstick quickly disappears and eye makeup adheres only under the best of conditions. To remedy this problem, you’ll need to find makeup products that are advertised as “long wearing,” “extended wear,” “kiss-proof,” or “waterproof.”

I also urge you to test these products before the big day. The same product can produce different effects on another person. For example, one person might describe one brand of mascara to be perfect, while another thinks it’s too clumpy. Personally, I’m a minimalist. If I can purchase one product that will do the job of five, I will. That’s where “makeup sealants” come in.

Makeup Sealants to the Rescue

Makeup sealants are clear lacquers that are used under or over makeup, depending on the sealant. Quite by accident, I found the sealant I’ll be using on the day of my wedding.

I originally purchased the sealant because my eyeliner had a way of moving with the force of gravity, causing me to look like I had two black eyes (or whatever color eyeliner I happened to be wearing).

The salesperson swore that the product would work to prevent the meltdown I was experiencing, so I tried it. I was surprised to find that when I used it, my makeup simply did not budge.

The sealant even held my eye makeup in place during a bout of crying at a sad movie! The product I bought came with several makeup brushes, including a lip brush and a mascara wand.

I knew it “froze” my eye makeup, so one night I experimented to see if it would seal my lipstick through dinner. I applied lipstick, blotted with a tissue, then painted the sealant on, followed by another coat of lipstick (to counteract the “tacky” feel).

Lo and behold, the lipstick color was intact even after a particularly messy chicken dinner!

I’m proud to say I’m confident knowing which product will increase the staying power of my makeup on the day of my wedding. I urge you, too, to find the ultimate makeup for your wedding day by allowing yourself plenty of time for trial and error. Good luck!

Wedding day hair styles make you look and feel great! But your wedding day is approaching and you haven’t picked a hairstyle! Where should you start?

Time to Get Your Hair Done

The best wedding day hair styles make you look and feel great!

Your wedding day is fast approaching and maybe you haven’t picked a hairstyle! Where should you start?

First, and hopefully before you buy your veil, you need to talk with a hair stylist and get advice about what styles would best suit you on your day.

Don’t wear an up-do just because all your friends did or you see it in pictures all of the time; the question is…

Does it look good on you?

Hair Stylists

Talk with the stylist you’re using about what styles you think look good on you too. If you’re in St. Louis, make sure you check out our list of the top St Louis hair stylists. If you completely disagree with the stylist, you may want to find a different stylist.

Also, don’t wear your hair in a way that is just totally different from your usual style; you still want to look like the woman your husband-to-be fell in love with.

For example, I always wear my hair down. I kept it down on my wedding day. Also, my hair is a little bit wavy but is mostly straight. I usually don’t hot curl it, so instead of trying to force my straight hair into curls, I had it perfectly straightened (with a blow dryer and hot iron).

At first I wanted to have it wavy or curly, but then I considered my hair…it really doesn’t hold curls! How sad would I be to spend hours having it curled to find that the style wouldn’t make it past the ceremony? The only other option would be to use a ton of hair spray, but who wants to run their fingers through that on the wedding night?

Veils & Tiaras

Second, you need your veil. Much of the style will be determined by your veil. If you haven’t gone shopping for your veil yet, you need to consider what kind of hairdo you will wear on your wedding day and make it clear to the store you are getting your veil from. Remember you can have your veil made at many bridal boutiques for about $130-$200. That’s what I did, and my veil was very beautiful.

I picked a tiara first and they added the rest of the veil. I even had them put small pearls throughout the veil. The good thing about having it made is you can tell them exactly how long you would like it and they can give you advice based on what your dress looks like. Of course you should have your dress prior to buying your veil.

Hair Rehearsal

Third, bring the veil in and have your first hair rehearsal! Play around, try different ways of wearing your hair. Make sure not to get any hair products on your veil if possible. Be sure to try wearing it up and down just so you can see what it looks like. Some veils will lend well to hair being down and some to hair being up. As I mentioned earlier, you should try to consider the hair style before buying the veil.

And Color?

Fourth, ask your stylist about color. You might be considering color or highlights so start early. Again, don’t go and dye your hair black if you’ve been a red head all of your life. Your wedding day is not the time to try outrageous experiments. This is the time to look sweet and natural. Chances are, if you take a big hair style or color risk for your wedding day, you will be uncomfortable.

Final Hair Style Tips

The last thing your should do for your hair is be sure to eat right and take your vitamins because your hair loves a healthy diet! Yogurt, eggs, nuts, fruits, and vegetables will all help your hair and skin look great! Try home remedies that can’t hurt like putting honey in your hair and washing it out after about 15 minutes.

Also, for dry scalp, you can rub aloe vera into your scalp and wash out after 5 minutes. Try the egg, honey and olive oil mix for about 15 minutes. Doing home remedies like that are part of the fun of being a bride-to-be! Try inviting the bridesmaids over for hair treatment night too! Good luck! And may you have a good hair day!

You may be planning a winter wonderland wedding but your skin may not think the freezing weather is quite so wonderful! Winter can leave skin parched and dehydrated so you will need to give it some TLC if you wish to look your very best for your big day.

Even if you have a skin care regime that you are happy with throughout most of the year, winter always has some challenges up its sleeve that mean you may have to change your tried-and-tested beauty routine.

However, this winter you shouldn’t just stick some extra moisturiser on and hope. With just a little more care, your skin can be glowing and radiant for the most special day of your life.

Use an exfoliator to brighten

Dull skin is part and parcel of winter for far too many women. Tackle it head on with an exfoliating cloth or brush, or exfoliating gloves. This will help to improve circulation and promote better skin texture and tone. Don’t overdo it though – scrubbing too often or too hard can leave skin sensitive.

Exfoliate your face and neck by applying a gentle massaging motion, perhaps with the aid of a body polish (depending on the type of exfoliator you have chosen). This will help to remove old skin cells and reveal healthy, glowing skin underneath.

Use an oil to rejuvenate

A lot of people are scared of using facial oils, especially if they have oily or combination skin. Facial oils are in fact recommended for all skin types so don’t shy away for that reason! They have so much to offer and really help to rejuvenate tired, dry winter skin.

Choose carefully and you’ll find a facial oil packed with nourishment and hydration to bring your skin to the best condition in time for your wedding day. You’ll see almost instant results!

Use a gentle cleanser to retain moisture

Harsh, alcohol-based cleansers can leave skin dry and sensitive. Try swapping to a gentle face wash or creamy cleanser that will remove the daily grime from your skin as well as keeping it feeling soft, smooth and supple.

Make sure to cleanse both morning and night, and remember the rest of your beauty routine – tone and moisturise!

One final winter wedding skin secret

Planning a wedding is exhausting and stressful. Take time out of your schedule for a facial or massage at a spa – your body and mind will thank you for it!

Every bride wants to look and feel her best on her wedding day. Here are our top ten tips for you to radiate beauty on your big day.

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. Looking beautiful on this special day is priority one for brides-to-be – after all, you will be the center of attention as you walk down the aisle!

If you’re looking for ways to make your face, hair and figure their most appealing on the big day – we can help! Here are some tips that you can use to become more radiant and to look your absolute best on your big day…

#10 – Proper Diet
A lot of brides go on crash diets before their weddings, in order to be as slim as possible when they get married. However, you can actually short-circuit your own beauty by dieting too stringently before you walk down the aisle. Harsh diets make women look drawn and even haggard, and they are unhealthy.

Instead of crash dieting, you should consider a careful diet that gives you all the nutrients to need to glow at your wedding. Make sure you eat well, but take it easy on carbs, sugar, and fat! To get the best results, make sure you eat enough omega-3 fatty acids (these are “good fats”), such as those in salmon and mackerel.

These omega-3 oils can improve the look of your skin and hair, and they also boost your mood and energy levels. Healthy foods like almonds, colorful vegetables and fruits, lean meats, and whole grains will be gentle on your system and improve your overall appearance.

Consider a regimen of probiotic yogurt before the big day – probiotics reduce bloating and make you seem slimmer – naturally. Lots of pure water (avoid sodas, even diet versions) will be great for your skin – it will moisturize from the inside.

#9 – Exercise
Getting into an exercise routine a couple of months before your wedding can be a very effective way to burn fat and tone your body. If you don’t usually do cardio, you should get into it gradually. Going for a run doesn’t cost anything, and it can be one of the best ways to reduce stress, tone your muscles, and burn calories.

If gentle exercise is more appealing to you, consider a yoga class or a stretching regimen such as Pilates. Many models and actresses use Pilates to create a long, lean line that looks great in clothes. If you want to look willowy in your wedding dress, Pilates can be exactly what you’re looking for. This system of exercise was designed to help people to recover from illnesses and injuries – it’s designed to be safe and effective.

Look for free intro classes in your neighborhood and test out a few options. Working out, along with a proper diet, will help you to look sleek and fabulous at your wedding.

#8 – Skin Care
Many brides opt for facials right before their weddings – and sometimes, they regret getting these treatments. The extractions in facials can cause swelling and redness. If you’re planning a facial, get it at least a week before the big day, to give your skin enough time to recover.

Your best bet is a careful, gentle regimen with products from trusted, dermatologist-approved companies like Neutrogena, Clinique, and Dermalogica. Be sure to cleanse, tone, and moisturize each morning and night, and avoid harsh products that strip your skin. Too many abrasive scrubs or chemicals can cause ruddiness – the last thing you want in your wedding photos.

Keep it simple, and always take your makeup off before you go to bed. Avoid serious procedures like chemical peels if your wedding is less than a month away. It takes time to recover from these treatments. Botox can also be a risk – if you’ve never used it before, now may not be the time to experiment.

Occasionally, Botox can cause drooping eyelids etc. It’s rare, but it does happen. Just go easy on your skin and keep it soft and smooth with the right products. A spray-tan might not be the best idea on your wedding day – if you tan, be sure you don’t go too far.

#7 – Makeup
Many brides get their makeup done professionally on their wedding day. You must find a makeup artist who understands subtlety – you don’t want to be too painted. A wedding dress is a time-honored symbol of freshness and innocence – your makeup should also look fresh, simple, and beautiful.

The best way to get good results is to study your own coloring. If your skintone is cool, with blue undertones, then cool pinks, purples, and ruby reds will flatter you. If your skintone is warm, with yellow undertones, shades like brick (orange-red), cinnamon, and honey-brown will highlight your beauty.

#6 – Wedding Dress
Using complementary color theory works with makeup – it also helps you to find the perfect “white” for your wedding dress. Some women radiate in pure snow-white – others will look best in gentle ivory that brings out the warm tones in their skin. Look at your skin, hair, and eye colors – are they cool or warm?

If you’re cool, you should go for pure, snow-white – it will flatter you the best. Ivory is perfect for warmer-toned brides. Then, consider your shape – if you’re curvy, a lower neckline and fitted waist will give your figure definition. If you’re boyish, add curves with a voluminous skirt and embellished (beaded) bodice.

Remember to take some pictures of yourself as your try on gowns – pictures don’t lie! As long as your feel great in your gown, you are on the right track.

#5 – Accessories
You can really add flair with your wedding accessories – they will create a sense of individuality. If you’re still shopping for wedding rings, consider buying matching bands for bride and groom. For example, if you’re of Irish, Scottish, or Welsh ancestry, you could opt for Celtic wedding bands engraved with ancient symbols.

If you’re both a little bit “alternative” you could go for bold, edgy designs. Use your bridal jewelry, shoes, and veil to express yourself on your wedding day.

#4 – Bouquet
Look for flowers that suit your coloring! If you’re pale and fair, look for pink roses, or blossoms in cool tones like lavender, mauve, and fuchsia. If you’re warm, look for a bouquet with orange and yellow blooms. Even a tiger lily or some exotic flower can look stunning when a bride has warm skin tones. Use your coloring to coordinate everything you wear and carry on your wedding day!

For more information on this, consider learning about “seasonal beauty” through a quick Google search – it can really pay off. Also, consider the symbolism of some flowers – white roses may be stunning, but they are often used at funerals, and their deeper meaning doesn’t mesh well with a wedding. If you’re superstitious, find flowers with positive, romantic associations.

#3 – Your Groom
What your groom-to-be wears can also affect how you look on your wedding day! If you’re not comfortable with his attire, it will show in your face and body language. Be sure to “guide” your fiancé as he shops for his tux, suit, or accessories. If you’re cool-toned, try to get him to wear things that flatter your coloring. Convince him that a classic look is more appealing than a pale-blue tux!

If he has his heart set on wearing something “original” at your wedding, at least make sure he chooses colors that work with your outfit. Then, smile and have a sense of humor about it. Generally, men will look best in subtle tones at their weddings, but some men have what it takes to pull off daring or colorful looks – it really depends on their personalities!

#2 – Underpinnings
Of course, only your fiancé will see what you wear under your gown, but it can actually affect the way you look in your wedding dress. Some “sexier” lingerie may not be supportive enough to flatter you.

Consider wearing more utilitarian undergarments (decent bras that hold you in place, even Spanx to slim you down if you’re feeling heavy through the hips and thighs) on your wedding, then packing away sexier underpinnings for your wedding night. This strategy can ensure that you look your best.

#1 – Attitude
A happy woman is a beautiful woman – nothing is more attractive than a bride who is at peace, joyful, and grateful. If you’ve given in to Bridezilla syndrome, find a way to put it behind you.

Every wedding has its little problems and snafus – you need to accept this ahead of time. By the day of your wedding, you should be feeling great about everything! Getting enough sleep, eating and exercising, and generally just appreciating the love you share with your fiancé will help you cultivate the right attitude on your wedding day.

Smiling and sharing your joy with loved ones and friends will make you sparkle on the big day.

Mineral makeup is a superior choice when selecting makeup for your wedding day. Here are five benefits to using mineral makeup.

If you are wondering what type of makeup to use on your big day that will last well throughout the night, mineral makeup is your best bet by far. One of the greatest advantages to mineral makeup in general is that it is naturally healthy and good for the skin because it allows it to breathe when the makeup is on the complexion.

Still, for your wedding day, one of your greatest concerns may be keeping your makeup fresh and beautiful so that it doesn’t smudge if you cry, sweat, or anything of the like. Here are some of the advantages you can expect from using mineral makeup for your wedding day:

Fresh Face

If you have used mineral makeup before, you may have observed that it goes on smoothly to your skin and helps you to look fresh and beautiful. This is something that is so vital for your wedding day because a heavy liquid foundation can often look like a mask or cakey if it is applied too thickly.

Natural Color

Again, using a traditional liquid foundation may appear discolored or heavy looking on camera, especially if it is not blended well into your jaw line. Mineral makeup goes on in the powdered form, and you can blend two shades together to customize to your skin tone. This is a much more natural approach that will literally match your own skin tone.

Long Lasting

A great advantage to mineral makeup is that it will last well throughout the day, even if you are sweating from activity, like dancing at your wedding reception. If you apply mineral makeup before your ceremony, you can count on it lasting well into the evening so that you remain looking beautiful all night long!

Cover Imperfections

Whatever your concerns may be – acne scars, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, a red skin tone – mineral makeup will lightly coat the skin and seamlessly mask these imperfections. This is truly one of the best ways to neutralize a number of issues in the complexion so that you look overall radiant and beautiful on your wedding day.

Setting Spray

One of the best ways to finish off your mineral makeup application is with a mineral infused setting spray, which will freeze your makeup for the big day ahead of you. This is a successful method used by professional makeup artists, which will set the makeup in place so that you look fresh all night long!

If you are working with a makeup artist for your wedding day or are doing your makeup yourself, keep in mind that mineral makeup will be the most natural and long lasting choice compared to heavier liquid foundations. Of course, make sure to have a trial run using mineral makeup before your actual wedding day so that you can determine what type of coverage you need, how your skin will look in pictures, and how long the makeup will stay on. Congratulations!
