Cancun Honeymoons

Pin It with STL Weddings

I know there are couples out there who want to explore different cultures and have the adventure of a lifetime on their honeymoon. My husband and I love adventure. But we were so stressed out after months of wedding planning that for the first time ever, all we wanted to do was sit and relax.

To be honest, even if you are the adventurous honeymooner, Cancun has a lot to offer – zip lines, sailing, Mayan ruins, jungle tours, and more. But I want to focus on how to have a relaxing, reenergizing Cancun honeymoon. If you want the same, read on for some tips.

Hotels
If you are visiting the white sandy beaches of Cancun to relax, you should definitely pick a hotel that is on the South end of the ‘strip’. Not only will you be dropped off first after departing from the airport, these hotels are much quieter and secluded than the hotels to the North.

Access to Beach
The best way to relax is to lounge on the beach, so beach access is important. Choose a hotel that has plenty of beachfront property and enough comfortable lounge chairs for all guests. Also, stick to the beach as opposed to the lagoon. The lagoon is beautiful, but is home to alligators.

Mini Trips
There are numerous intensive day trips offered in the Cancun area, including scuba excursions, tours of Mayan ruins, and sportfishing. All of these I may have tried on any other vacation, but for my honeymoon, I wanted something more low-key. Here are a couple suggestions:

  • Isla Mujeres – Isla Mujeres is only a 20-minute ferry ride from Cancun, and definitely has that ‘island life’ feel. Residents aren’t in a hurry to get anywhere and you can spend hours sitting in open-air restaurants sipping on Mai Tais. The beaches are beautiful, but bring a blanket to sit on if you don’t want to pay to rent the lounge chairs. And for a relaxing tour of the island, rent a golf cart and drive yourself.
  • Lobster Dinner Cruise – While this cruise does go through the lagoon, one of the places I advised you to avoid, it’s romantic enough to make you forget about the alligators. This trip focuses on couples in love and you are wined and dined without having to lift a finger.

Places to Avoid
If your aim is to relax, here are some places to avoid:

  • Cancun Center – If there are college kids on Spring Break, this is where they will be, along with anyone else who came to Cancun to party. Vegas-like shows and bars stay open until 4:00 a.m., with after parties and debauchery lasting even later.
  • Flea Market – While you can sometimes get good deals on souvenirs here, the aggressive sales tactics and constant cat-calling is far from relaxing. The local mall has many of the same things for similar prices.

So, what kind of honeymooner are you? The adventurous kind or the leisurely kind?
